Vaclav Havel died and we all know that today’s leftists just don’t see him as much of a hero, he’s more of a “hero”. They all know that Gorbachev was the real mover behind voluntarily bringing down the USSR (and that was a mistake anyway).
So goes the dominant narrative of the life of Václav Havel, the former Czech president, who died on Sunday aged 75. Havel, we are told, was a hero and one of the greatest Europeans of our age.
But, as with the recent consecration of Christopher Hitchens, another “progressive” opponent of the communist regimes of eastern Europe who found favour with Washington’s neocons, there is another side to the story.
Having stopped reading the Grauniad years ago, I can only assume this is serious, it’s the shallow, knee-jerk idiocy that caused me to stop reading it (and why most people spell it “Grauniad” and don’t link).
So why was what Havel did so bad?
Havel’s anti-communist critique contained little if any acknowledgement of the positive achievements of the regimes of eastern Europe in the fields of employment, welfare provision, education and women’s rights.
Yeah, they killed and impoverished everybody equally. Well, except for women, who somehow never rose to positions of power within any of these enlightened countries.
Or the fact that communism, for all its faults, was still a system which put the economic needs of the majority first.
Yeah, everybody got to live in the same shithole. Well, except for Party apparatchiks who lived somewhat better, but they deserved it, they were working for The Masses.
The funniest part about that bit is that I’m absolutely sure he wrote that with a straight face. Possibly a little sneer for those neo-cons who just don’t understand that communism it the most enlightened form of gov’t that, unfortunately, has just not been tried properly.
Havel, the son of a wealthy entrepreneur whose companies were nationalised when the communists came to power, showed little concern for the plight of ordinary people who lost out in the change towards a market economy. And there were losers aplenty.
Yup, you see, he didn’t continue the commie policies and in the changeover from commie dictatorship to a free market, a bunch of commie thugs were strung up from light posts. Poor wittle commies.
And even worse, after decades of commie looting, he didn’t immediately turn that ravaged country into Switzerland.
I’d say “RTWT”, but I hate giving the Grauniad links so you can decide. Oh wait, I forgot where I am. Nobody’s reading this much less clicking the links.
Checking the comments (they’re pretty good, he’s being called a tool and an idiot), I saw this link to another story I’d read at the Grauniad, funnily enough, the last time I’d been there, and it’s by the same fool.
Iraqi interpreters are quislings. I’d say, “It has to be read to be believed”, but that one isn’t even believable after reading it. Also in the comments I see this one I haven’t read or clicked, but apparently it’s a Paean to Lukashenko, the brutal thug with his boot-heel on the throat of Belarus.
FrnakJ is only about 2/3 as funny and he’s trying to be funny.
Saw the link with a short comment at Hot Air headlines and had to check to see if it was really that ridiculous. It’s even funnier. I don’t like giving the Grauniad links (or even clicking their links), but that is one funny darn article. Well, unless you ever lived in a commie country, then it’s probably pretty darn infuriating.
