Democrats say they are optimistic that they can regain control of the House of Representatives in the November election, an outcome that would mark a sharp reversal from the thumping defeat dealt to the party in 2010.
Personally the feeling I have had for months is that it is not only possible but probable and that the Dems will retain control of the Senate. I have zero data to back that up just a gut feeling.
Literally 5 seconds after I hit “publish” for this comment on DPUD’s post,
Embrace the doom. We’re so boned it’s not funny.
The endy has finally passed the funny.
I see this story linked at Hot Air(warning: Examiner campaign link, it always freezes my computer for a little while, it’s freaking annoying, I only click on accident anymore).
“Some people are much more into conspiracies than others,” (Ron V)Paul added, “If Santorum is an addict on conspiracies,
Okay, that’s fucking hilarious.
So there is some hope, at least I’ll still have something to laugh about as I cook my dog over my engineering text books.
…I was just wondering–How much does a gallon of gas cost in your neck of the woods these days?
Hope you’ve got some change left over for that mortgage payment.
Bummer, we really could really use a candidate like SMOD in 2012.
Heat of the Moment always makes me think of the South Park where Cartman sings to Congress so they legalize stem cell research, and then he uses fetal stem cells to replicate a Shakey’s Pizza.
Yeah…fucking bullshit. The Church caves every fucking time they make one of these threats, and am I seriously supposed to believe Cardinal George, the bishop who has made this threat, is going to follow through with it? Bullshit…Bull. Fucking. Shit. This is the same Cardinal who doesn’t have the stones to smack rogue priest Michael Pfleger in line, or remove him from Saint Sabina’s Parish, which should have been done years ago. If he doesn’t have the balls to stand up to Michael Pfleger why the FUCK should we ever believe that he’ll stand up to the federal government? Honestly.
Everyone is getting all fired up about this statement from the Cardinal, and I for the life of me do not understand why. The Church ALWAYS caves. ALWAYS. How many times do they threaten to withhold the Eucharist from politicians who are consistently pro-choice? Every election cycle. Without fail. And yet, how many dioceses actually enforce it? Not a damned one. Some individual priests will do it, and kudos to them. The previous Bishop of Scranton Diocese issued an appeal calling on Catholics to support pro-life candidates during the 2008 cycle, I know of at least one priest in town that refused to read the appeal, and made note of his refusal at mass.
And George Will had this dead on, and of course, I had it dead on, because I was saying the same thing before he ever said it.
And if it seems like I’m just bagging on the Church, I’m not, I grew up in the Church, I went to Catholic School for thirteen years, it’s not hatred that my reaction to the Church comes from, it’s extreme disappointment,
Yep, that’s the word from the Center for American Progress:
Ridiculous? Sure. The problem is that otherwise smart people are believing this.
[T]he intelligent, like the unintelligent, are responsive to propaganda…
And by “otherwise smart”, I mean two of my friends who happen to be math professors. Yeah, you read that right — not just one, but two math PhDs shared this on their facebook pages. Not medieval French literature. Not womyn’s studies. Math.
Now, just off the top of my head, I can think of a few big problems with this video. First, they’re only looking at the latest recession cycle, and not comparing it to other cycles, where we all know the comparison is not flattering. Second, they’re using GDP as an absolute rather than as %growth or annualized %growth by quarter. When you look at GDP growth, it’s more clear that Obama’s policies created a “thud” rather than a bang. Third, they’re ignoring the other contemporaneous massive interventions like TARP, various Fed and Treasury programs on the order of a couple hundred billion, and the Fed’s extremely aggressive monetary loosening. Fourth, the causal link from stimulus to economic improvement doesn’t even exist, at least not for the immediate impact that they’re implying. By the end of the second quarter of 2009 only about 8% of the stimulus had been spent. It took them until about June of 2010 to spend half of it, and by June of 2011 they had still only spent 83% of it. (Those dates being when I randomly chose to check in on the stimulus and take screen-caps of recovery.gov.)
How many quarters of GDP growth and jobs numbers were “worse than expected”, to the point where economic expectations were almost a free-standing punchline?
I could probably go on, but I know I’m preaching to the choir here. Further debunkery is left as an exercise for the reader. Now back to the video, and its purpose.
People who are otherwise smart, and who still have their jobs, are going to see some modest growth figures for the economy and say, “yeah sure”. The video is allows otherwise smart people to continue to believe what they want to believe, which is that Obama is doing okay, and that they didn’t make a mistake when they voted for him in 2008. It’s intellectual cover.
See, those smart guys made some graphs, and everything is cool.
In completely unrelated news, I’m hearing anecdotal evidence of ammunition shortages this year. If the polls don’t improve after the GOP convention, I think you’re going to see a rehash of 2008-2009 for guns and ammo sales/shortages.
We’ve all seen the headline,
Richard Dawkins: I can’t be sure God does not exist
As the resident atheist I feel I should comment.
That’s exactly correct. If you’re an honest atheist you have to admit you can’t be sure about the existence of a god. If you say there is no god, you’re just replacing faith in a god with faith in no god.
Many American atheists aren’t really atheists, they just hate Judeo-Christians and have replaced their parents’ faith with leftism, which is a particularly intolerant version of Dark Ages Catholicism, complete with saints, hypocritical clergy, heretics and self-scourging. You can tell that they just hate Jews and Christians by how they treat Israel, America and Muslim nations. Israel and America try to defend themselves and they’re The Debil!/Mama Boucher, people in Muslim countries go on a murderous rampage because someone burned a book and it’s America’s fault.
Good for Dawkins for saying something intelligent, even if I still think he’s an asshole.
H/T all the news aggregators.
