BAG Day

Posted: April 15, 2012 by veeshir in This Is My BOOMSTICK!, You'll pry 'em from my cold dead hands

Wow, a slow bag day this year. Either all the BAG Day participants have joined Lemur King in boycotting me, or our 5 readers are going to be woefully underarmed when the Russians invade.

So on to BAG Day loot.

Russ from Winterset decided to build a fine AR for BAG Day, a fine sentiment. I might have to do that for next year.

We’ll let Russ describe it

The forend is free-floated, the barrel is chrome lined, the buttstock is a MagPul MOE and the sights are cheapo folding ones I bought at a gunshow.  The rifle is what they call a “dissipator”, which marries up a carbine length barrel with a rifle length forend & gas system….The single point sling I bought from AIM online completes the package.

Very nice. But I am a little afraid of that huge barrel shroud (the shoulder thing that goes up)

Next, an extra fine Bisley single action .45LC convertible to .45ACP. That’s awesome. I’m pretty jealous about that.

Did I mention I’m jealous?

Next we have a possible BAG Day acquisition that Russ is looking to sell

A Maadi AKM (not to be confused with a Mahdi AKM, I don’t think he’s planning on taking over Arrakis)

Not a bad gun to buy, you’ll have to talk to him about price, maybe put your name and addy in the comments if you’re interested. The only problem is that it only comes with 1,100 rounds of ammo (I call that “Wednesday”) and 20 mags (8@20 rounds, 7@30 and a few others). That’s a nice shooting iron. Especially since commie 7.62X39 is cheap and easy to buy and that’ll eat whatever you feed it.

Now to my purchase. I couldn’t get a firearm this year. I spent my bag day money on my car and moving my license and reg to AZ, so I got some ammo and used it to make some previous BAG Day purchases go “Booooom!”

I can’t believe how expensive .357 mag ammo is these days. At least .40 S&W is cheap and that’s my “making sure I can still aim a pistol” gun, so I have that going for me.

If anybody still wants to play along, I’ll update this post as necessary and DPUD is planning on adding a late edition this week, so let me or him know and we can get you in that post.

Until next year, keep your ammo dry and your guns clean.

Ammo for the AK is still available for approximately $4.50 a box of 20 or less (especially if you buy in bulk), so it’s affordable to shoot. There are a LOT more accessories available (even the original wooden stock that’s still sitting in my closet), so holla out if you’re interested. I’ve got a few people locally mulling it over, so the offer is subject to prior purchase.

On the .357 Magnum, I laid up a shitload of Federal American Eagle ammo in 158 grain JSP before the price went stratospheric. Instead of getting it for $15 a box or less, now it’s going for $23 a box or more. You can still find some of the off-brand .357 for around $18 a box, but the Fed AE stuff has always been a go-to loading for me. I’ve always been a fan of the bigger soft-nosed slugs over the smaller hollow points. The velocity is lessened, but the mass impacting the target makes up for the difference IMHO. Plus, most of my shooting with the lever-action .357 is within 100 yards, so long-range accuracy and less bullet drop at long distance isn’t a factor.

  3. I had no clue y’all had a BAG Day :)

    That Bisley is mighty purdy.

  4. My meager BAG Day submission is here: http://supplysidepolitics.blogspot.com/2012/04/bag-day-2012.html.

One of these years, I’ll actually get that .45; but this is not the year

No BAG day submittal is meager. ANY contribution is welcomed.

BTW, I need to do a Mea Culpa. The buttstock on my AR? Not an MOE. That’s the pistol grip. My buttstock is actually a CTR from MagPul. I flubbed the caption.

Still cannot get hold of my FFL. I’ve got a shop I may try if he doesn’t get back to me.

SIG-Sauer 1911 for me. The time was right. Still want a Remington 1911 and a Ruger 1911, but neither of these companies decided to submit to Kalifornia’s drop-test extortion.

    Cheers, Medium Sized Jake

That’s nice. I like Sigs, at least I like my 2340 a lot, and I have to figure their 1911 is sweet.

I have a Springfield Mil-Spec but I really want a Colt, although the Remington would be cool. My father was a big Remington fan so I used to be but I haven’t bought a Remington since I was 16.

My biggest problem is that I like new calibers, it was a tough decision to get the Beretta PX-4 Storm (to fill out my rifle/pistol combo for my CX-4) because I already have the 2340, so when I go for a new gun I tend to get a caliber/gun-type I don’t already have.
