The rancher’s name was Don Alejo Garza Tamez, and was a well known and widely respected rancher in Nueva Leon.  Don Alejo was met by Zetas, who told him he’d be giving them his ranch.  Don Alejo said he was going nowhere, and would be waiting for them.  Don Alejo was a lifelong outdoorsman and hunter, and more than capable with a rifle.  He ordered all his employees to leave his ranch, and began to fortify his home, ready his weapons and ammunition.  Then the Zetas came, several vehicles loaded with men with assault rifles.  Don Alejo started picking them off one by one with his hunting rifles, placed at windows all through his house.  When their rifles weren’t working, the Zetas started throwing grenades into the house, Don Alejo finally succumbed to wounds received in the firefight, but took four Zetas down with him, and two more he’d badly wounded were taken by responding Mexican Marines.

This story is mostly seeing coverage in Mexican media, but it deserves reporting in all of the Americas.  Don Alejo Garza Tamez deserves to be recognized for his heroic last stand in the face of overwhelming odds.

  1. God rest his soul. That man was a true hero. I wish there were more like him in Mexico, and in the States, for that matter.
