Astronomers using ESO’s Very Large Telescope have discovered a gas cloud with several times the mass of the Earth accelerating fast towards the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way.
So the center of the galaxy is getting ready to explode (or rather, did explode thousands of years ago and we’re just now seeing it).
Maybe the Mayans had faster-than-light telescopes and watched it happen and knew when it was going to get here.

I keep oscillating between two states… Revulsion at the thought of four more with Obama and fear of four with Romney. Rationally I know the arguments on both sides but the emotional side is SO VERY PISSED about the last hopesy-changey election… People are right, I hate Obama, but it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the fact that such an incompetent got into the White House – I suspect largely because he is black, which is a different kind of racism.
Oh well, the world ends in 2012 as you say. Maybe it will be a cleansing fire.
