We’ve all seen the headline,

Richard Dawkins: I can’t be sure God does not exist

As the resident atheist I feel I should comment.

That’s exactly correct. If you’re an honest atheist you have to admit you can’t be sure about the existence of a god. If you say there is no god, you’re just replacing faith in a god with faith in no god.

Many American atheists aren’t really atheists, they just hate Judeo-Christians and have replaced their parents’ faith with leftism, which is a particularly intolerant version of Dark Ages Catholicism, complete with saints, hypocritical clergy, heretics and self-scourging. You can tell that they just hate Jews and Christians by how they treat Israel, America and Muslim nations. Israel and America try to defend themselves and they’re The Debil!/Mama Boucher, people in Muslim countries go on a murderous rampage because someone burned a book and it’s America’s fault.

Good for Dawkins for saying something intelligent, even if I still think he’s an asshole.

H/T all the news aggregators.

  1. Good for Dawkins for saying something intelligent, even if I still think he’s an asshole.

It’s smarter than his line “It looks like intelligent design, but it isn’t.”

But the asshole part? Yeah, I fear that might be incurable.

  2. Dejah Thoris says:

Sometime in the last decade, I decided to give him a shot by listening to him read one of his books, during a long road trip. We couldn’t get beyond the first half hour, as the insufferable condescension was starting to condensate on the windows. I much prefer Stephen Jay Gould’s respectful wonder at the magnificently quirky universe that we live in.

Besides, Dawkins’s attitude toward belief and faith is so snotty and his insistence that atheists MUST educate the pathetic masses just makes me want to kick him in the balls. I’d run him over with my truck if he ever tried to get near my beloved and deeply faithful Grandmother.

  3. Goober says:

A true atheist, as i understand the term, is just as “faithful” as a religious person. They have replaced certainty in the existence of God with certainty of the NON-existence of God – no less an act of faith than the former.

What I believe Mr. Dawkins is indicating that he is is “agnostic.” This is a person who is intelligent enough to understand that there is no way to know one way or the other, and so does not commit one way or the other, and keeps an open mind.

Being agnostic is the only stance in the argument that holds up to logical analysis, and yet, it is still missing something, because logic can’t explain all. We need a little faith here and there, don’t we?

  4. veeshir says:

You’re right, I always call myself and “atheist”, but I guess I’m an agnostic who believes that atheism is the way to bet.

    I don’t have faith.

  7. Human says:

Knowing—is believing without a doubt that you are right.
    Faith—is belief without evidence.
