I’ll put Bananarama in the #2 spot. “Venus” was tons better than the original(WhyTF was Frankie Valli doing a song that was clearly written from a female viewpoint? I mean, I’m not saying he was gay, but…), and “Cruel Summer” is one of the most iconic songs of my teen years.
But the Bangles clearly take #1. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince Who Was A Musical Genius Before He Went Bugfuck Nuts penned “Manic Monday” for them, and they did it all sorts of justice. Plus, they picked up “Hazy Shade Of Winter,” rocked the living shit out of it and shoved it up Paul Simon’s ass with a “This is how it’s done, bitch!” Kinda like Hendrix did Bob Dylan with “All Along The Watchtower.”
The Go-Go’s? Sorry, not even in third. I could name a dozen female bands that leave them in the dust.
