Earlier today I came across a posting on the twitter feed of a group of unknown individuals about the doxing (posting of personal information such as social security numbers online) of several celebrities and political figures. Among them were Sarah Palin, Joe Biden and Britney Spears. I wasn’t really in a position to do much about it at the time so I emailed a few people and let it go, but about ten minutes ago I just caught an update on Ars Technica.
Turns out that the source of the posted information wasn’t some super sophisticate hack. It was a government mandated website, annualcreditreport.com, that was created to make it easier for people to get their credit scores but which is apparently so shoddily designed that apparently anyone with basic google skills can defeat it’s security measures. So the law of unintended consequences strikes again and now in some way we will all end up having to deal with the mess.
I’ll let other people worry about the big ticket items like the upcoming zombie invasion this is the shit that gets my blood boiling. Just Saying.
