A controversial bill is currently working its way through  (Philadelphia) city hall designed to regulate ‘stop and go’ liquor stores. One part of the bill would force business owners to take down bulletproof glass inside their stores.

They don’t put that very expensive, bullet-proof glass up for a fashion statement.

I can answer this question

 But at what cost to their safety?

Lots of dead convenience and liquor store employees. Followed by lots of the owners leaving and losing their shirts as their formerly barely-profitable businesses go to $0 value so they can’t be sold.

Read The Sea People, latest in the Dies the Fire series.

I really liked the first three books, Dies the Fire, The Protector’s War and A Meeting at Corvallis. They were very darn good. And very darn good for Stirling is very darn good indeed.

The next part of the series, with the kids of the originals, started getting too mystical for me but he’s such a good writer, and the books were excellent, so I kept reading.

After The Given Sacrifice, we’re on to the grandkids or great grandkids of the original folks, and now it’s all fantasy and quests and a plethora of magical swords. Seriously, every time you turn around there’s another one. Two good ones, so far, and some bad ones.

The Desert and the Blade was very good, the one after that pretty much sucked. He over-describes things, I accept that, but that book had too many 3-page descriptions of meals and a shitload of pages dedicated to describing Ranger flets, which have already been adequately described in previous books. It could have been about 20 pages long and we wouldn’t have missed very much.

The last one, The Sea People, was pretty good but I’m done with it. It was all magical swords and spirit voyages and shit.

I don’t read fantasy books much, I know lots of sci-fi is basically fantasy books with blasters instead of magic swords, but I do try to stick to hard sci-fi and stay away from deus ex machina stuff, like Star Trek TNG ‘inverting the subspace particle’ field to fix every damn thing or Q coming in and it was all a joke.

I saw an ad for the beginning of a new series about alternate history of WWI, hopefully it’s as good as other Stirling books.

CNN’s Alisyn Camerota got steamrolled by a panel of 6 people brought on to discuss Trump’s reaction to the Charlottesville tragedy.  You could tell the panel segment wasn’t going to play out the way Camerota envisioned it from the very start when she asked who was “troubled” by the President’s response to the violence in Charlottesville and precisely no one raised their hand. Meanwhile one panelist gave this response regarding Trump’s controversial “blame on both sides” comment:

 “I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I mean he addressed the problem. Let’s face reality, there are problems on both sides.”

“I think it’s ridiculous to have me choose between Hitler and Stalin which is what I consider both groups are.”

“The Antifa group to me is totally a very Stalin-ish kind of group.  If you’re willing to set fires and burn places to the ground, that doesn’t seem like a very peaceful group to me.”

Now that’s news! I will say it’s hilarious that Alisyn Camerota went full leftist after trying to pretend to be ‘fair and balanced’ for years. I wonder if she’s sincere or just realized the way to CNN stardom is dishonest fakenewsing.

Boy, girl, man, and woman are words that describe gender identity, and some people with the gender identities “boy” or “man” have vulvas, and some with the gender identity “girl” or “woman” have penises/testicles. Your genitals don’t make you a boy or a girl.

Most kids want to pretend they’re elves or wizard or something like that, this is nothing but Munchausen by trans-proxy syndrome. It’s always been depressing watching parents shove their delusions on their children, now it’s a Societal Good.

There are no good outcomes in that bullshit. It’s like ADHD, sure some kids have it, but not the 20% that are medicated to get them to sit down and shut up… diagnosed with it. Except this is even worse as, according to adult actions, the actual number is well under 1%.

Of course, abortionists are insane so they are thinking as if abortion doesn’t go far enough, we need retroactive abortion!

Speaking of Crazy Talk!, I’ve been saying that we need to fire everybody in the DO”J” GS-12 and higher and replace them with Free Republic commenters. While it might be awesomely entertaining, I realized how crazy that is.

Judicial Watch announced it sent a notice-of-violation letter to the state of California and 11 of its counties threatening to sue in federal court if it does not clean its voter registration lists as mandated by the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). Both the NVRA and the federal Help America Vote Act require states to take reasonable steps to maintain accurate voting rolls. The August 1 letter was sent on behalf of several Judicial Watch California supporters and the Election Integrity Project California, Inc.

We should just disband the entire DO”J” and replace them all with Judicial Watch!

 In the letter, it is noted that public records indicate the following counties have more registered voters than voting-age citizens:

  • San Diego (138%)

  • San Francisco (114%)

  • Los Angeles (112%)

  • San Mateo (111%)

  • Santa Cruz (109%)

  • Monterey (104%)

  • Imperial (102%)

  • Lassen (102%)

It’ll then take you years and a lot of money to get your property back from the thugs in NJ. If you’re lucky, your case will cause enough of a stink that Christie will throw you a bone… pardon you. But since he does not spend all his days pardoning people it would just be crazy to even drive through NJ with your legally owned property.

In his first Kentucky appearance since the fake vote on the fake repeal of Obamacare last month, McConnell announced that fellow lying liar Lamar Alexander (R-TN) would be teaming up with Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) to create a bill that will continue using money we don’t have to subsidize insurance we don’t want until 2018.

If Murray’s name sounds familiar, it should. She’s one of the GOP’s favorite “go-to” Democrats when selling out on campaign promises. It was Murray who joined Paul Ryan a few years ago to pass the failed Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013. Despite their promise to cut the budget, Ryan and Murray’s failed budget agreement increased spending, raised taxes, and threw out any attempt to balance the books for two years.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m gonna disagree on this.

Today’s teenagers are more sheltered and less independent than previous generations, and the shifts correspond with the mainstreaming of smartphones around 2012. Instead of going out with friends and looking for every chance to get away from their parents, the post-Millennial generation is staying in and Snapchatting—and it’s making them less happy.

My nieces and nephews are all over 20, a couple approaching 30. When visiting my sisters I noticed that their kids did not play the way we did and it was long before they all had smart phones.

They were constantly underfoot, they wouldn’t leave us alone. I remember thinking how weird that was.

When I was a kid I spent most of my time trying to keep adults from knowing what I was doing. I left in the morning and came back for lunch, for dinner and then when it got dark. When we visited my uncles’ and aunts’ houses, I and my cousins immediately disappeared. We had serious trouble to get into, having parents around crimped my style. How could I get blood all over my clothes with them watching?

Adults do the same freaking thing with smartphones, how many of us have seen pics of a family eating dinner out and all of them looking at their smartphones? So that smartphone/unhappy trend is across age lines, hovering around your parents is a totally different, unhealthy (IMO), trend.

State of my Gs.

I turn my tablet to airplane mode when I get done tubing but I left it on one night, all night. A couple days later I was at 75% of my usage. It took more than a week for me to get to 90% usage, so it seems I have enough Gs for a month, so long as I don’t forget to turn it off.

This month I’m going to run out of Gs and be forced to go to 2G or pay extra. I’ll probably pay the extra. 2G sucks. I still have most of my phone’s Gs so I have that going for me, but I’m surely going to run out long before my month starts over.

 

TV without cable.

I’m going to have to go to a bar to watch MNF and if I want to watch the Giants on an out of market deal, but I’m pretty happy.

I have maybe 10 channels I watch and they don’t all have the same commercial schedule. One Spanish language channel shows action movies. I watched The Expendables the other day, you lose not a thing by not understanding what they’re saying. Hell, it probably enhances the experience as the dialogue is mostly stupid.

I watch Grit most. during the afternoon they have Death Valley Days. About every 3rd or 4th show is filmed in Apache Junction. It’s funny, I can often spot where they are. It looks different but that’s mostly because they paved a lot of roads in the last 50 years.

There’s a little girl who walks her dogs in the morning right by my trailer, there’s a grass area and a dog park across the street. If I’m sitting outside with Kago her dogs come over to say hi to Kago as they go by. He likes them, he sniffs butts with the 3 year old and smacks the puppy in the face when he tries to play. Then the puppy goes to his water bowl and assaults the water, the older one drinks, Kago drinks, and off they go. We would chat about nothing as the dogs did their thing.

One day I was wearing an NRA hat and met her and her pasty-faced, sunken chested, soul-patched boyfriend, they’re probably around 30 or a little younger. I hadn’t seen her in the two weeks since. I was wondering if I had been shunned. Yesterday I took Kago for his afternoon constitutional and as he was sniffing in the dog park, with the gate open, I noticed her two dogs running over. She came over sorta reluctantly. We chatted. She’s been trying to walk one of the dogs off the leash, today he ran over to sniff Kago’s butt, she came over with the puppy. I wonder if I was shunned but since we’re right by the grass area, she has to go near my house and her dog doesn’t realize we’re the wrong sort of people. I hope so. Wrecking Safe Spaces is a public service. Or…I’m just being too paranoid. I do that you know.

I was watching the local news this morning when they had a press conference with Sen Blumenthal (D-WBASTY) where he was innuendoing and lying about Mueller’s fishing expedition, Trump and Russia. I wasn’t sure why it was newsworthy, had they passed the coup-law about how Trump can’t fire Mueller, so I looked.

Blumenthal was on CNN Monday morning discussing Mueller’s investigation shortly before Trump began tweeting – though, unlike last time, Trump didn’t refer to Blumenthal as “Richie.”

Instead, he called him a “phony Vietnam con artist.”

It was a case of industrial strength butt-hurt. Trump noticed something funny.

An even better question would be, “Can the GOP be saved if Trump wins?” as we spend the next 4 years with them calling their base a bunch of assholes instead of trying to figure out why the people who used to vote for them and send them money are telling them to fuck off.

I’m still not sure, the GOP is doing everything they can to piss on and piss off their voters so the jury is still out. Forming a new party would be tough but if the GOP continues to be unresponsive and rudely dismissive of its voters it might be necessary.  2018 and 2020 are going to be interesting.

 

This is what happens when a gov’t decides its voters are a bunch of assholes who need to shut up.

There is no conceivable way a majority or even a plurality of Venezuelan people would vote in favor of chaining themselves into the slavery and misery of a Cuba-style tyrannical dictatorship. So the only only option available left for Cuba’s puppet dictatorship in Venezuela is to force it through by using the only tactics they know: Violent repression and murder.

Hillary was their best chance for that last part, her enemies have a bad habit of committing suicide after all.

They’d love to do that here, that’s why they keep trying to take our guns. And that’s why we have them. Just ask Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Washington.

Their problem is that most of the people with guns are not onboard with the gov’t violently taking away our rights. That’s why the last three admins were busily arming federal agencies with no law enforcement powers.

I seriously can’t decide if I want to get into a war with Russia in the Middle East or in eastern Europe.

On the one hand, in the Middle East we have only one true ally, Israel, with one sorta ally, Jordan, so fighting there would be tough as we would have to fight everybody except the Kurds while in the eastern Europe we’d have former SSRs on our side.

But in the Middle East Russia would have to deal with ‘allies’ who would turn on them at the drop of a kefiya so they’d be embroiled with fighting their ‘allies’ almost as much as they’d have to fight us.

Add in nuclear war between Iran and Pakistan-supplied Saudi Arabia and Russia would be almost as fucked as we would be.

I have to wonder if Mattis could make it look as though were going to get involved and then turn around and point and laugh as Russia fights all the people they just got done arming. Iran is nobody’s puppet, Tsar Putin I is all about installing tsarlings. While Assad in Syria is a puppet-dictator, the mad mullahs are a lot of things, but tsarlings they ain’t. They’re used to installing shahs to be under the Shahinshah. That would lead to a different, three-sided war between Iran, Turkey and Russia.

It’s weird out there, usually I can spot a theme each day but today I can’t, not sure if it’s me or if it’s just that things are so all over the place.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation Friday requiring the state to give guidance to public schools about policies for transgender students, including blocking the schools from forcing the students from using bathrooms that conflict with their gender identities.

I’m sure HS students are mature enough to treat this with the respect and decorum it deserves.

I look forward to Dress Thursday where the football players all wear dresses to use the girl’s bathroom and locker room every Thursday and it will be a hate-crime if anybody tries to stop them.

I’m surprised that’s in NJ, sure they’re solidly Democrat but I figured that was more a corruption thing than a lefty thing. It’s funny that the GOP governor signed that into law. He’s a perfect northeast Republican in the mold of Susan Collins (R-Maine) and John McCain (R-DC).

Which reinforces Harvey’s point that we’re the RINOs, not them.

I think I’m actually the RINO.

I say that because I’m finding more and more that the Republicans aren’t the conservatives. Being a conservative and aligning yourself with a Republican doesn’t make Republicans conservative. It just means you’re aligning with the least liberal, least horrible of the viable options.

I don’t really want to take up the label “RINO” because of what it has represented. But, the reality is, the Republican Party isn’t a bunch of conservatives. But, a bunch of conservatives vote for the Republicans.

I’m not surprised about Minnesota though.

I used to tutor HS kids in math because AZ students had to pass the AIMS test. It was HS math, heavy on algebra and geometry.

They canceled it because so many kids could not graduate HS because they couldn’t pass it. It was depressing trying to teach kids how to do math when they used their fingers to add 5 to 17 and a calculator to multiply 10*7.

In today’s exciting episode, CA has gone AZ one better.

The chancellor of the California community college system has stated that institutions’ algebra requirements are “the biggest barrier” for “underemployed or unemployed Americans,” and as such is … a civil rights issue.

So you can have a college degree without algebra. Sigh. I’m sure that’ll make people happy to hire CA graduates.

It’s not a civil rights issue, it’s a community issue. Too many communities in our nation do not prize education. It’s absolutely not a “discrimination” deal or else Jewish people would have the same problems.

This is the shit that will get Trump’s supporters pissed off.

First, we have the State Dept derping.

Collins, who opposes the current bill, is the only Republican in the Senate who voted against repeal back in 2015. Shelley Moore Capito, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, and more. Would they all vote the same way again with a Republican in the White House and a majority of voters opposed to the bill?

Still the authorities have been doing their best to tackle stabbings with a knife ban. Carry a knife without a “good reason” and you can get four years in prison…

But it’s working well enough that many of the gangs responsible for the violence are turning to acid.

Acid attacks in London rose from 162 in 2012 to 454 last year. There have already been 199 acid attacks this year. Five acid attacks just happened in London in the space of little more than an hour.

And so the obvious new solution is drain cleaner control.

A Friday memo emailed from Washington’s Evergreen State College’s administrators to the student body said that actions taken by the social justice advocates over the last few months — including intimidation and prohibition of egress from school areas — have been illegal, and could result in criminal charges.

So my Societal Observation!!!!!

Many parents today do not teach their kids the stuff that parents used to teach them as a matter of course. 

My sister is an awesome cook. Her soups are unbelievable. She even makes sausage and escarole with turkey sausage and it’s still unbelievably good.

Her daughters couldn’t cook a hot dog without directions and a microwave. They’re actually angry with me that I think that’s ridiculous. “I have a phone and people deliver food.” is the politest response I’ve heard.

 

A few years ago I had some neighbors, a 21 year old couple with a baby. They were clueless about so much normal stuff that people do.

For instance, I lent them my gas grill. The second day I looked outside and saw him by the grill with the flames shooting up a couple feet. I went out to get him to turn down the gas when I saw he had filled the gas grill with charcoal and used lighter fluid to start it. He had thrown out the lava rocks before doing so. The worst part was that he had dragged it to by his apartment so he had to carry the gas tank. He had no idea what a gas grill is. They weren’t tweakers, just people whose parents did not teach them life skills.

 

Obviously it’s not everybody, but it’s enough to be a very bad trend.

What if we actually do get to the societal collapse our fine betters are demanding? What would happen to these helpless individuals when they’re forced to try to live without people to do for them? It wouldn’t be pretty. It wouldn’t be funny, but I’m sure there will be people enough laughing at them as they die of hunger in a forest full of food or by shitting their lives out from drinking bad water.

She wasn’t the worst, but I’m a native of the city that brought us that song and think she deserves a dishonorable mention.

It’s a race to the most obvious, despicable lie told with a straight face.

Each week there’s a more despicably dishonest lie from the NYTimesWashPostCNN which lie is then disseminated by the NYPostABCCBSNBCnon-HannityFoxNewsetc., they ignore the corrections or memory-holing that inevitably come soon thereafter.

Two Iranian civilians were killed in an alleged cross-border attack by suspected militants on Saturday, according to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

A statement on the Guards’ Sepah News website said, “On Saturday evening, a terrorist team… fired (ammunition) from within Pakistani territory towards the Iranian border region of Saravan. Two local workers in the region were martyred in this terrorist attack,” read the statement.

For “Two Iranian civilians” read, “Two terrorists, possibly/probably Republican Guard”.

The suspense on whether Pakistan will get involved in the Middle East nukular war is one of the uncertainties out there. We have a serious problem in our criminal justice system.

Plea bargains are by far the most common way cases are settled in courts across the country. Most research claims anywhere between 95 percent to 97 percent of criminal cases in America never go to trial. Instead, they are hashed out between prosecutors, defense attorneys and defendants.

More than 90% are plea bargains because the system is overwhelmed. With repeat offenders.

There’s no ‘rehabilitation’ in the system for criminals, jail is where they get three hots and a cot and talk to other criminals. Jail is notably lawless what with the various gangs, not to mention if jailhouse rape is as prevalent as supposed. How can someone be rehabilitated if they live in a lawless state where Might Makes Right?

The problem is that the system is so huge and has so many people going through it that a change would be nearly impossible. Especially since lawyers like the current system and they’re the ones who make the laws and decide what the laws mean.

Those extra payments stem from the funds’ decisions to roll back forecasts for what they expect to make on their investments, which means Illinois will need to set aside more money to ensure it can cover pension checks due in the decades ahead.

Engine update!

I’m looking at 4 bodies in particular. There are three 66 El Caminos and a 65 Impala SS convertible. There are some 62 and 66 Rivieras I’d love to get, but they have 7.0 liter big-blocks that need work. I don’t want to be the guy who took out a big block and put in a small block. I’m pretty sure there’s a place in Hell for that and I’d like to avoid it.

The Impala is my choice, but the El Caminos could be ready with around $5k while it would take at least $10k for the Impala but…. 1965 Impala SS convertible!!!!!! If I paint it it would probably be worth more than double the El Caminos. I’ve seen them in the high-$30K region if they’re even decent while it takes a really nice El Camino to get up there.

Also, all the El Caminos have engines, the Impala doesn’t. I would put them in the Caballero, not running just put in, possibly in the bed, and sell it with an engine, which would make it worth more and save me more money in this deal.

I have some money I’m saving to buy a house and if I use it for the Impala I’d probably have to sell it when I’m ready to buy the house. With the El Caminos I’d be able to keep them. But 1965 Impala SS convertible!

And yeah, I wanted the car to drive in the summer to save the top on my Mustang, but 1965 Impala SS convertible!!!!!! It’s just awesome. There is nothing like two tons of convertible Detroit steel barreling down the road.
